was a statistical tie between al gore and george w. bush, the country does move on and we head to the next election. >> i always say to people, look, mitt romney didn't come all that close to winning. he didn't come as close as i thought he might. one quick other follow-up on this, the thing i've been struck by, does mitt romney retain a constituency within the repub c republican party? he was the nominee. he got the votes. but it doesn't seem like he's having much influence. he's not in office right now so is not doing -- i don't see him returning to an office. he's not going to run for president again. does he kind of just shuffle off to the side? >> it really seems that way. one of the more amazing things is the imprint he had on the republican party, its ideas, seem so little right now particularly just weeks after the presidential election. you can make the argument even john mccain who lost decisively in 2008, all the republicans and the tea party people who are demanding an end to earmarks, there was john mccain, and very little -- one of the calls mitt romney ended up having that republica

george w. bush dropping in to the immigration debate in a rare public appearance yesterday at the federal reserve bank in dallas. he is the latest, of course, to attempt to bring up comprehensive immigration reform for the party, an issue that seriously hurt mitt romney with latino voters. meantime, two possible contenders laid out their vision. paul ryan and mario rubio speaking at the leadership award dinner in washington. both made not so veiled references of mitt romney's 47% remark. >> both parties tend to divide americans in to our voters and their voters. let's be really clear. republicans must steer far clear of that trap. >> there are millions of mario rubios across america today. they're not looking for a handout. all they want is a job that provides for their families. >> with me now, roger simon for politico and quote a column "when all falls, gop could try democracy." roger, a great pleasure having you on. your reaction to ryan, rubio and former president bringing up issues we didn't hear in that tone of republicans in the election. >> well, the republican party fell off the

w. bush got re-elected in 2004 and he and the republicans were prepared to implement the agenda he ran on, elections of consequences. remember that famous soundbyte? obama ran on higher taxes for the wealthy and won. lz, shouldn't he be making the same argument? that is what he ran on. >> absolutely. you know what i find interesting, if you look at the statistics, many of the blue states that supported president obama are some of the richest states in the country. and so not only did you have him defeat romney pretty handedly in the electoral college, but people willing to sacrifice their own money to make sure that president obama, his policies made it to the white house. you know, it was the exact opposite in just the republicans. some of the red states were some of the poorest states in the country. so i think it is very interesting that when you see average american citizens who happen to be making a little bit more money willing to sacrifice for the good of the country, i think that's a good message and something to get behind and stand on. >> lz, our producers are here, can w

. and those estate taxes revert to the levels they were before george w. bush was in office. those taxes were lowered to help us get through a couple recessions. this is unfair. people should be entitled to pass along their hard earned money. the concentration of wealth needs to be kept in check. it doesn't create dynastys. that was one of the earliest goals of this tax. as you said, the difficulty here is dividing up a house, or a farm or a going concern to pay a portion of the tax that is owed. that presents a problem for families having to pay that estate tax can affect the growth of family businesses. it's been fluctuating a lot in recent years. family run businesses can't plan for it. in the end it -- that part of things, the number of people who will actually have to pay that tax on big family estates farms or businesses is estimated to be about 50 people. 50 different estates next year. it's mostly a principle discussion. >> opponents call it the death tax. i haven't heard about you, in all the discussions over the past few weeks what might be over the deal. i haven't heard for republi
